Whitby Jet Earrings

Whitby Jet is a semi precious organic gemstone formed over millions of years from the fossilised remains of the modern day Monkey Puzzle tree. It is smooth and lightweight and can be polished to a deep black lustre.

The port village of Whitby in the UK was a major production centre for jet in the 19th century.

Today, small pieces of Jet are still washed up on the beaches of Whitby.

These earrings date from the late 19th Century and have been beautifully carved, and have 9ct shepherds hook fittings. Length: 4.5cm from ball to base.
