Austro-Hungarian Locket Backed Pendant in Silver

Austria-Hungary, also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire was a diplomatic alliance of two sovereign states with a single monarch who was titled with both Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. This Empire existed between 1867 and was terminated by Austria on 31 October 1918.

During this era, the combination of the two countries saw some of the most colourful and exciting jewellery designs ever seen. Large, eye watering garnets, brightly coloured gems and paste, the use of enamel and stunning silver and gold work were some of the hallmarks of these magnificent creations.

As a predominantly Catholic nation, religious motifs were popular, such as this locket-backed pendant featuring Mother Mary and baby Jesus in gold, on a background profusely covered in crosses. As so often with jewellery from this era, remnants of the once brightly coloured enamel still exist on the front and back with cobalt blues and greens visible. A natural pearl adorns the base. The reverse is a locket, with original glass still intact.
A real treasure from a tumultuous time in European history.
Length (from top of bale to base) 6.5cm x 4.5cm.
