Victorian Guard Chain – 9ct Gold
Guard chains are long chains that were used by ladies in the Victorian period to attach and protect their important possessions. Common attachments included pencils, watches, keepsakes, woollen muffs, or hand warmers. The chains were woven through dresses to secure them. Due to their length they are now often worn two or three times around the neck as a necklace. They’re a versatile piece because you can also attach your favourite pendants or other pieces of jewellery to them. This handmade gold Victorian guard chain was designed with a second set of links inside to stop wear on the gold links and increase their strength. Guard chains had to be strong due to their daily use in guarding important belongings and keeping them close to hand. The piece is so well crafted that is difficult to see the inner links without trying to expose them.
